Yusuke Urameshi ist 14 Jahre alt und starb unter unglücklichen Umständen, als er ein kleines Kind vor einem Auto retten wollte. Er selbst ist jedoch alles andere als ein Engel, wodurch die Geisterwelt umso überraschter war von seiner Selbstlosigkeit. Eigentlich war Yusukes Tod noch gar nicht vorgesehen, weswegen ihm die Möglichkeit gegeben wird, ins Leben zurückzukehren. Dort fungiert er zwangsweise als ein Geisterdetektiv und somit beginnen die Abenteuer für ihn und seine Kameraden, sei es bei gewissen Nachforschungen oder einem Kampfturnier.
