Naver Corp. is a South Korean company that was founded in 1999. Its headquarters are located in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province.
The company is known for the search engine of the same name Naver, the game portal Hangame, the comic portal Naver Comics, the streaming service V Live and the messenger LINE.
The subsidiary Hangame Japan was founded in September 2000. In September 2001, Hangame Communications merged with Naver to form NHN Corporation. The companies One-Cue and Search Solutions were also acquired and integrated.
The subsidiary Hangame Japan was renamed NHN Japan in October 2003. The development studio NHN Games was founded in 2004. The American subsidiary NHN USA, America Corporation was founded in July 2005. The internet service NHN Services followed in August. The company behind the search engine, 1noon, was acquired in June 2006, followed by Datachorus in October. Starting the same month, Naver Corp. publishes manhwa and comics for its users under the name Naver Toon.
With Naver Japan, the company founds another subsidiary in Japan in November 2007. This was merged with NHN Japan and Livedoor in January 2012, with NHN Japan remaining.
A corporate restructuring led to the establishment of NHN Entertainment Corporation on August 1, 2013, to which the entire video games division was outsourced. At the same time, NHN Corporation was renamed back to Naver Corporation. The two companies then went their separate ways. The new subsidiaries Camp Mobile and Line Plus were also founded. The subsidiary NHN Japan was renamed LINE Corporation.
Since July 2014, the company has also been offering Manhwa and Webtoons in English under the portal Webtoon and the associated app. The portal is one of the best-known webcomic sites in South Korea.
In August 2015, the live-streaming service V Live was launched with in-house productions and live videos of K-pop stars. This programme can be accessed via their website, app, and YouTube channel.
The subsidiary Naver Webtoon Corp. (currently: Naver Webtoon Limited) was founded in May 2017, and subsequently founded Studio N in August of the following year.
