Fushigi Yûgi: The Mysterious Play (1995)

Miaka and Yui are best friends who are about to take their final exams and want to try to get into the next school together, which means a lot of extra work for Miaka in particular. One day, the two find the book “The Realm of the Four Gods” in the library and are pulled straight into the story. The book is like a long spell, and whoever finishes reading it gets the power to fulfil all their wishes. After a short stay, Miaka later returns alone and ends up at the court of the land of Kounan, where she becomes the chosen priestess of Suzaku. Suzaku is one of the four gods, and each god watches over a different land. The task of a priestess is to find the seven Senshi of the land – they all wear a certain mark on their body to summon the god in a ceremony and thus have their wishes fulfilled.

But everything is complicated when Yui also comes back into the book. Unfortunately, she ends up in the neighbouring country of Kutou and is thrust into the role of priestess of Seiryuu, constantly manipulated by the sinister Nakago. Thus, through a framework of lies and envy, Miaka and Yui become bitter rivals, especially as Miaka not only finds the love of her life, Tamahome, but builds a whole new family with the Senshi.

Miaka und Yui sind beste Freundinnen, die kurz vor ihrer Abschlussprüfung stehen und versuchen wollen, gemeinsam auf die nächste Schule zu kommen, was gerade für Miaka eine Menge zusätzlicher Arbeit bedeutet. Eines Tages finden die beiden in der Bibliothek das Buch »Das Reich der vier Götter« und werden direkt in die Geschichte gezogen. Das Buch ist wie ein langer Zauberspruch, und wer es zu Ende liest, bekommt die Macht, sich all seine Wünsche zu erfüllen. Nach einem kurzen Aufenthalt kehrt Miaka später allein zurück und landet am Hofe des Landes Kounan, wo sie zur auserwählten Priesterin von Suzaku wird. Suzaku ist einer der vier Götter und jeder Gott wacht über ein anderes Land. Aufgabe einer Priesterin ist es, die sieben Senshi des Landes zu finden – sie alle tragen ein bestimmtes Mal an ihrem Körper, um den Gott in einer Zeremonie zu beschwören und so die Wünsche erfüllt zu bekommen.

Doch alles wird erschwert, als auch Yui wieder in das Buch kommt und weniger Glück hat als Miaka. Sie landet im Nachbarland Kutou und wird in die Rolle der Priesterin von Seiryuu gedrängt, ständig von dem finsteren Nakago manipuliert. So werden durch ein Gerüst von Lügen und Neid aus Miaka und Yui erbitterte Rivalinnen, zumal Miaka nicht nur die Liebe ihres Lebens, Tamahome, findet, sondern sich mit den Senshi eine ganz neue Familie aufbaut.
