“Anne of Green Gables” is about the young Anne Shirley, who comes from Bolingbroke in Nova Scotia and, at the age of 11, doesn’t exactly have it easy: she is already an orphan and hasn’t really felt at home anywhere for a long time. Until one day, luck seems to favour her: a slightly older brother and sister, Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert, finally seem to be able to offer her a home. But appearances are deceptive: the two were actually looking for a boy to help them work in the fields. No wonder the two are disillusioned when the supposed boy turns out to be a girl. Anne is an open-hearted and sometimes quick-tempered girl with a lot of imagination, and, despite the misunderstanding, she is quickly taken to heart by the two and therefore finds a new place to stay at Green Gables Farm after all.

In addition to the Cuthberts, Anne also meets Diana, a shy girl from a wealthy background, who quickly becomes her best friend. And then there is Gilbert Blythe, who is very fond of Anne but is practically irrevocably downgraded by her to quasi-nemesis due to unfavourable and cheeky choice of words. So Anne spends her new everyday life on the farm and at school, but childhood doesn’t last forever, and somehow she too has to deal with serious decisions that will determine the rest of her life …

»Anne mit den roten Haaren« handelt von der jungen Anne Shirley, die aus Bolingbroke in Nova Scotia stammt und es mit ihren 11 Jahren nicht gerade leicht hat: Sie ist bereits Vollwaise und hat sich schon lange nirgendwo so richtig daheim gefühlt – bis ihr eines Tages das Glück hold zu sein scheint: Ein etwas älteres Geschwisterpaar, Matthew und Marilla Cuthbert, scheint ihr endlich ein Zuhause bieten zu können. Doch der Schein trügt: Die beiden haben eigentlich nach einen Jungen gesucht, der ihnen bei der Feldarbeit hilft. Kein Wunder also, dass die beiden ernüchtert sind, als sich der vermeintliche Junge als Mädchen erweist. Anne ist ein offenherziges und zuweilen aufbrausendes Mädchen mit reichlich Phantasie, das trotz des Missverständnisses schnell von den beiden ins Herz geschlossen wird und daher auf der Farm Green Gables doch noch eine neue Bleibe findet.

Neben den Cuthberts lernt Anne auch die zunächst schüchterne, aus wohlhabenden Verhältnissen stammende Diana kennen, die jedoch schnell zu ihrer besten Freundin werden soll. Und dann wäre da noch Gilbert Blythe, der eigentlich sehr von Anne angetan ist, aber aufgrund ungünstiger und frecher Wortwahl praktisch unwiderruflich von dieser zum Quasi-Erzfeind herabgestuft wird. So verbringt Anne ihren neuen Alltag auf der Farm und auch in der Schule, doch ewig währt die Kindheit nicht, und so muss auch sie sich irgendwie mit schwerwiegenden Entscheidungen, die ihr weiteres Leben bestimmen werden, beschäftigen …
