Perfect Blue (1998)

“Perfect Blue” tells the story of pop idol Mima Kirigoe, who belongs to the pop group CHAM!. The group has a lot of loyal fans, but because trends in the entertainment industry are short-lived, Mima is advised by her manager to pursue a different career – as an actress. At the last concert, Mima announces her exit with tears in her eyes, much to the disappointment of her fans. This disappointment goes so far that Mima is called a traitor by fax and a little later even receives a letter with explosive contents, which she only escapes thanks to sheer luck.

Despite a change of career, things are not great for Mima – and they are not supposed to get any better: As soon as she finally has her own computer, when she visits the Mima’s Room website, she realizes that someone has detailed information about her private life. After Mima has also had to play the role of a rape victim and, a little later, virtually sees herself in the outfit of her pop band, she finds it increasingly difficult to distinguish reality from illusion …

»Perfect Blue« erzählt vom Pop-Idol Mima Kirigoe, die zur Popgruppe CHAM! gehört. Die Gruppe besitzt zwar eine Menge treuer Fans, aber weil die Trends in der Unterhaltungsindustrie nun mal kurzlebig sind, erhält Mima von ihrem Manager die Empfehlung, eine andere Laufbahn einzuschlagen – als Schauspielerin. Auf dem letzten Konzert verkündet Mima mit Tränen in den Augen ihren Ausstieg, sehr zur Enttäuschung ihrer Fans. Diese Enttäuschung geht so weit, dass Mima via Fax als Verräterin beschimpft wird und wenig später sogar einen Brief mit explosivem Inhalt erhält, dem sie nur dank blankem Glück entgeht.

Trotz Karrierewechsel läuft es für Mima also nicht toll – und besser soll es auch nicht werden: Kaum hat sie endlich einen eigenen Computer, stellt sie bei einem Besuch der Webseite Mima’s Room fest, dass irgendjemand detailliert über ihr privates Leben Bescheid weiß. Nachdem Mima auch noch die Rolle eines Vergewaltigungsopfers hat spielen müssen und sich wenig später quasi selbst im Outfit ihrer Popband erblickt hat, fällt es ihr zunehmend schwerer, Realität und Illusion zu unterscheiden …
