Shirobako: The Movie (2020)

Four years have passed since Aoi and her friends successfully completed work on “Third Aerial Girls Squad”. In “Shirobako: The Movie”, the five girls are still working at Musashino Animation (“Musani”), but now the harsh reality has caught up with them: Work on the previously unreleased project “Time Hippopotamus” was progressing well, but when partner TRAP withdrew his cooperation, Musani’s boss, Masato Marukawa, had no choice but to bury the project. Many employees then left the company, Masato resigned as chairman, and Shun Watanabe became his successor.

Since this incident, Aoi has suffered from heavy depression; her friends from high school days have not fared much better: despite promotions within Musani, their dream of owning their own anime is moving further and further out of reach. That could change: Western Entertainment is also in a clinch with a cooperation partner and now wants to work together with Musani on the anime “Air amphibious assault ship SIVA”. For Aoi, Ema, Midori, Misa and Shizuka, this is a chance to crawl out of their hole and get a little closer to their dream again. Although there are many hurdles on the way to completion, the five friends do their best to ensure that an incident like “Time Hippopotamus” does not happen again.

Seitdem Aoi und ihre Freundinnen die Arbeiten an »Third Aerial Girls Squad« erfolgreich abgeschlossen haben, sind vier Jahre ins Land gezogen. In »Shirobako: The Movie« arbeiten die fünf Mädchen zwar noch immer bei Musashino Animation (»Musani«), doch nun hat sie die harsche Realität eingeholt: Die Arbeiten am bislang unveröffentlichten Projekt »Time Hippopotamus« gingen zwar gut voran, doch als der Partner TRAP seine Kooperation zurückzog, blieb Musanis Boss, Masato Marukawa, nichts anderes übrig, als das Projekt zu beerdigen. Viele Mitarbeiter verließen daraufhin das Unternehmen, Masato trat als Vorsitzender zurück und Shun Watanabe wurde sein Nachfolger.

Seit diesem Vorfall hat Aoi an nicht unerheblichen Depressionen gelitten; ihren Freundinnen aus der Oberschulzeit ist es nicht viel besser ergangen: Trotz Beförderungen innerhalb Musani rückt ihr Traum vom eigenen Anime immer weiter in die Ferne. Das könnte sich ändern: Western Entertainment liegt ebenfalls mit einem Kooperationspartner im Clinch und möchte nun gemeinsam mit Musani am Anime »Air amphibious assault ship SIVA« arbeiten. Für Aoi, Ema, Midori, Misa und Shizuka ist das die Chance, aus ihrem Loch zu kriechen und ihren Traum wieder etwas näher zu kommen. Zwar befindet sich auch auf diesem Weg zur Fertigstellung so manche Hürde, doch die fünf geben ihr Bestes, damit sich ein Vorfall wie bei »Time Hippopotamus« nicht wiederholt.
