The Stranger by the Shore (2020)

“The Stranger by the Shore” tells the story of two young men who find each other through personal loss. Shun Hashimoto is an aspiring novelist who has openly admitted his homosexuality but is still not completely comfortable with it. Three years ago, he came out, left his fiancée at the altar and ran away from his angry family. His path led him to an island in Okinawa, where he has now been living with his grandmother for three years.

One day, Shun notices a young man often sitting lonely and sad on the beach for hours. He is Mio Chibana, a high school student whose parents have recently died. Shun and Mio start talking and gradually become closer, but no sooner has Mio overcome his grief than he is sent to the mainland to an orphanage.

Three years go by and Shun, who has taken quite a liking to Mio, hears almost nothing from him – until he suddenly appears before him again and confesses his feelings. Three years is a long time, however, and after the lack of communication, Shun is not ready to let Mio into his heart again that easily. When the shadows of his past threaten to catch up with Shun, the situation becomes even more complicated …

»Ein Fremder am Strand« erzählt die Geschichte zweier junger Männer, die durch persönliche Verluste zueinanderfinden. Shun Hashimoto ist ein angehender Romanautor, der seine Homosexualität zwar offen zugegeben hat, aber sich dennoch nicht vollständig wohl damit fühlt. Vor drei Jahren outete er sich, ließ seine Verlobte vorm Altar stehen und nahm Reißaus vor seiner aufgebrachten Familie. Sein Weg führte ihn auf eine Insel in Okinawa, auf der er nun seit drei Jahren mit seiner Großmutter lebt.

Eines Tages stellt Shun fest, dass ein junger Mann oft stundenlang einsam und traurig am Strand sitzt. Dabei handelt es sich um den Oberschüler Mio Chibana, dessen Eltern erst kürzlich verstorben sind. Shun und Mio kommen ins Gespräch und sich dadurch allmählich näher, doch kaum hat Mio seine Trauer überwunden, verschlägt es ihn aufs Festland in ein Waisenhaus.

Drei Jahre gehen ins Land, und Shun, der ziemlichen Gefallen an Mio gefunden hat, hört nahezu nichts von ihm – bis dieser urplötzlich wieder vor ihm erscheint und ihm seine Gefühle gesteht. Drei Jahre sind jedoch eine lange Zeit und Shun ist nach der langen Funkstille nicht einfach so bereit, Mio wieder in sein Herz zu lassen. Als Shun dann auch die Schatten seiner Vergangenheit einzuholen drohen, verkompliziert sich die Situation noch mehr …
