The title of the anime “Komi Can’t Communicate” already anticipates it: Shouko Komi can’t communicate!

Komi is new at Itan Private High School, which is known for being a place full of oddballs and eccentrics. In the midst of all these strange students is Hitohito Tadano, who wants to be as average as possible. To fit in and not make big waves is his goal for the next few years at his new school. But his plan is doomed to failure when he learns that Komi is his seatmate. She is the prettiest girl in the whole school, which is why not only some of the attention falls on him, but also a lot of jealousy from his classmates.

Every time Tadano tries to talk to Komi, she runs away. When the two are alone and Tadano tries to talk to her again, Komi takes flight. But Tadano is able to stop her by pointing out an obvious fact that everyone else – including the teacher – doesn’t even notice because they are blinded by Komi’s charm. Tadano is not quite sure himself, but he gathers all his courage and asks her the question that will take their relationship to a new level from then on: “Are you not good at talking to people?”

Since then, the two are communicating via the school blackboard. Komi tells Tadano about her dream to make 100 friends. Tadano not only tells her that she has already found her first friend in him, but he also promises to help her find the remaining 99 friends. Will the two of them make it? And how will their relationship develop?

Der Titel des Animes »Komi Can’t Communicate« nimmt es bereits vorweg: Shouko Komi kann nicht kommunizieren!

Komi ist neu an der Itan-Privatschule, die dafür bekannt ist, ein Ort voller Sonderlinge und Exzentriker zu sein. Inmitten all dieser sonderbaren Schüler befindet sich Hitohito Tadano, der so durchschnittlich wie nur möglich sein möchte. Sich anzupassen und keine großen Wellen zu schlagen, ist sein Ziel für die nächsten paar Jahre an seiner neuen Schule. Doch sein Vorhaben ist zum Scheitern verurteilt, als er erfährt, dass Komi seine Sitznachbarin ist. Diese ist das hübscheste Mädchen an der ganzen Schule, weshalb nicht nur ein Teil der Aufmerksamkeit auf ihn fällt, sondern auch sehr viel Eifersucht seitens seiner Klassenkameraden.

Jedes Mal, wenn Tadano versucht, mit Komi zu sprechen, läuft sie davon. Als die beiden alleine sind und Tadano abermals das Gespräch sucht, ergreift Komi neuerdings die Flucht. Doch Tadano kann sie stoppen, indem er sie auf eine offensichtliche Tatsache anspricht, die alle anderen – inklusive der Lehrer – gar nicht wahrnehmen, weil sie von Komis Charme geblendet sind. Tadano ist sich selbst nicht ganz sicher, doch er nimmt all seinen Mut zusammen und stellt ihr jene Frage, die ihre Beziehung ab da an auf eine neue Ebene bringen soll: »Kannst du nicht gut mit Leuten reden?«

Seitdem kommunizieren die beiden mittels der Schultafel. Komi erzählt Tadano von ihrem Wunsch, 100 Freunde zu finden. Tadano sagt ihr nicht nur, dass sie mit ihm bereits ihren ersten Freund gefunden hat, sondern er verspricht ihr zudem, ihr dabei zu helfen, auch die restlichen 99 Freunde zu finden. Werden die beiden es schaffen? Und wie wird sich ihre Beziehung entwickeln?
