Kotarou, a little four-year-old boy, has hardly moved into his new flat when he is already standing in front of the door of his neighbour Shin Karino, a moderately successful mangaka, and presents him with a box of handkerchiefs as a welcome gift. As the conversation continues, it turns out that Kotarou actually lives all by himself, behaves quite maturely for his age and is quite independent in general. He has an alert mind, a sharp talent for deduction and uses an old-fashioned way of expressing himself, which he adopted from the hero of his favourite anime “Tonosaman”.

Used to standing on his own two feet from the beginning, Kotarou always remains a child, however, and with his quite idiosyncratic charm he manages to make the acquaintance of a whole series of adults who, of course, don’t miss the opportunity to support him in all sorts of everyday things. Even if it’s only at the kindergarten, where Kotarou’s room neighbours are soon recognised as substitute parents. So it gradually becomes clear what his biological parents are all about and how he got into this situation. Kotarou repeatedly asks his supporters questions – childish but not naïve questions with which he leaves his adult friends baffled or, alternatively, drives them to sheer despair. Occasionally he also interferes without being asked, sometimes taking their affairs into his own hands. So that in the end it cannot be said with certainty who exactly is supporting whom …

Kaum ist Kotarou, ein kleiner vierjähriger Junge, in seine neue Wohnung eingezogen, steht er auch schon vor der Tür seines Nachbarn Shin Karino, einem mäßig erfolgreichen Mangaka, und überreicht ihm eine Schachtel Taschentücher als Willkommensgeschenk. Im weiteren Gespräch stellt sich heraus, dass Kotarou tatsächlich ganz für sich alleine wohnt, sich für sein Alter recht erwachsen verhält und überhaupt ziemlich selbstständig ist. Er hat einen wachen Verstand, eine scharfe Kombinationsgabe und pflegt eine altertümliche Ausdrucksweise, die er vom Helden seines Lieblingsanimes »Tonosaman« angenommen hat.

Von klein auf gewohnt, auf eigenen Füßen zu stehen, bleibt Kotarou aber immer auch Kind, und mit seinem recht eigenwilligem Charme gelingt es ihm, mit einer ganzen Reihe Erwachsener Bekanntschaft zu machen, die es sich natürlich nicht nehmen lassen, ihn bei allerlei Dingen des Alltags zu unterstützen. Und sei es auch nur im Kindergarten, wo Kotarous Zimmernachbarn bald als Ersatzeltern anerkannt sind. So wird ganz allmählich klar, was es mit seinen leiblichen Eltern auf sich hat und wie er in diese Situation geraten ist. Immer wieder stellt Kotarou Fragen an seine Unterstützer – kindliche, aber nicht naive Fragen, mit denen er seine erwachsenen Freunde verblüfft zurücklässt oder sie wahlweise schier zur Verzweiflung treibt. Gelegentlich mischt er sich auch ungefragt ein, indem er deren Angelegenheiten manchmal auch selbst in die Hand nimmt. Sodass sich am Ende nicht mit Gewissheit sagen lässt, wer denn da wen genau unterstützt …
