Ushio e Tora (1992)

Shigure Aotsuki has told his son the legends about monsters and similar monstrosities ever since. One thing Ushio Aotsuki has had to listen to over and over again: the feat of his ancestors, who supposedly pierced a demonic monster with the Beast Spear and therefore imprisoned it in the depths of the temple – the very temple in which Ushio also spends his life. In the meantime, not only has he grown annoyed by this legend, but he also does not believe in it at all. However, this changes when, one day, Ushio enters a room underneath the temple complex alone and discovers that the legend is probably true after all. And that’s where the problems begin: the aura of this sealed monster attracts others of its kind, thereby, forcing Ushio to free this abomination in the hope of fighting fire with fire.

Thanks to the consecrated spear, Ushio may be able to keep Tora, said creature, at bay, but the matter is far from over. Tora would love nothing more than to feast on humans – and he intends to start with the descendant of the damned samurai who caused his imprisonment centuries ago. So now the monster, invisible to other people, aims to haunt poor Ushio until he gets careless. From then on, he must also fight other monsters that have been beckoned if he wants to protect his hometown.

Eines musste sich Ushio Aotsuki von seinem Vater Shigure immer wieder anhören: Legenden von Monstern und ähnlichen Ungetümen, vor allem von der Heldentat seines Vorfahren, der mit dem Biest-Speer ein dämonisches Ungeheuer durchbohrt haben soll und deshalb in den Tiefen des Tempels gefangen gehalten wurde, in dem auch Ushio sein Leben verbringt. Der ist von dieser Legende nicht nur genervt, er glaubt auch kein bisschen an sie. Das soll sich allerdings ändern, als Ushio eines Tages allein in einen Raum unter der Tempelanlage hinabsteigt und feststellt, dass die Legende wohl doch kein Unfug ist. Und damit fangen die Probleme an: Die Aura des Scheusals zieht weitere Monster an, sodass Ushio nichts anderes übrig bleibt, als das Monster zu befreien, in der Hoffnung, Feuer mit Feuer bekämpfen zu können.

Dank des geweihten Speers mag Ushio zwar Tora, besagte Kreatur, in Schach halten, doch vorbei ist die Angelegenheit deswegen noch lange nicht. Tora würde nichts lieber tun, als Menschen zu fressen – und mit dem Nachfahren des vermaledeiten Samurais, der vor Jahrhunderten für Toras Gefangenschaft gesorgt hat, würde er am liebsten anfangen. Nun also will das für andere Menschen unsichtbare Monster den armen Ushio heimsuchen, bis dieser unachtsam wird. Der muss fortan auch noch mit weiteren angelockten Monster kämpfen und dabei seine Heimstadt beschützen.
