Macross Zero (2002)

Nine years have passed since an alien battleship crash-landed on Earth, making humans realise the substantial impact of extraterrestrial beings on their lives and even on the formation of their civilisation. As the alien artefacts can be incredibly valuable, and the coveted missile has not yet been fully comprehended nor repaired, a global conflict broke out over the technology that lies dormant within. The Anti-U.N. has established itself as a counter-organisation to the U.N. and declared war thereon, which has already cost numerous lives and led to even young people being sent to the battlefield as pilots. A year before the Zentraedi arrive on Earth, this conflict is slowly approaching its climax.

Meanwhile, the young F-14 pilot Shin Kudou is shot down by a new type of Anti-U.N. fighter jet above the remote island of Mayan and meets the sisters Sara Nome and Mao Nome on this retrograde place. It turns out that this place harbours remnants of the “Proto-culture”, which was responsible for the development of humans, among other things, and whose technology is similar to that of the alien fighter. The interest of numerous researchers is aroused, and the peaceful days are naturally numbered for the islanders as the worldwide conflict also reaches them. Shin and Sara are forced by the various powers on Earth to resurrect the Bird-Human from the legend of the Mayan people, which could have unforeseen consequences …

Neun Jahre ist es inzwischen her, dass ein außerirdisches Kampfschiff eine Bruchlandung auf der Erde machen musste. Den Menschen wird klar, dass selbst bei der Entstehung ihrer Zivilisation extraterrestrische Wesen mitgewirkt haben und dass deren Artefakte unheimlich wertvoll sein können. Noch ist der begehrte Flugkörper nicht vollständig erforscht und repariert, aber um die Technologie, die in ihm schlummert, ist ein weltumspannender Konflikt entbrannt. Die Anti-U.N. hat sich als Gegenorganisation zur U.N. etabliert und dieser den Krieg erklärt, was bereits zahlreiche Leben gekostet hat und dazu führte, dass sogar Jugendliche als Piloten auf das Schlachtfeld geschickt werden. Ein Jahr bevor die Zentraedi auf der Erde eintreffen, nähert sich dieser Konflikt so langsam seinem Höhepunkt.

Der junge F-14-Pilot Shin Kudou wird unterdessen oberhalb der entlegenen Insel Mayan von einem neuartigen Kampfjet der Anti-U.N. abgeschossen und lernt auf dem rückschrittlichen Eiland die Schwestern Sara Nome und Mao Nome kennen. Es stellt sich heraus, dass dieser Ort Überbleibsel der »Protokultur« beherbergt, die unter anderem für die Entwicklung des Menschen verantwortlich war und deren Technologie jener aus dem Alien-Kampfschiff ähnelt. Das Interesse zahlreicher Forscher ist geweckt und die friedlichen Tage sind für die Inselbewohner daraufhin natürlich gezählt, als der globale Konflikt auch sie erreicht. Shin und Sara werden von den verschiedenen Mächten der Erde dazu gezwungen, den Vogelmenschen aus der Legende des mayanischen Volkes wiederzuerwecken, was ungeahnte Konsequenzen haben könnte …
