Lupin III: Le profezie di Nostradamus (1995)

When does anything go according to plan for the famous thief Arsène Lupin III? Not in “Lupin III: Farewell to Nostradamus”, anyway, because no sooner do he and Daisuke Jigen get their hands on an incredibly valuable diamond than their old acquaintance Inspector Zenigata is on their heels again. Although the two escape their pursuer by plane, this is also the prelude to a series of setbacks and even worse incidents. First, Arsène’s doll, which serves as a hiding place for the diamond, is stolen by the unruly girl Julia, only for the doll to end up in the hands of Fujiko Mine. As if that wasn’t enough, the plane is also hijacked by assassins.

However, when their bomb seems to activate on its own, the passengers manage to fight back and eventually escape. Julia, on the other hand, is kidnapped by another group of strangers. Arsène learns that she is the daughter of a U.S. presidential candidate, that the hijackers belong to the now infamous Nostradamus Sect, and that its leader predicted the hijacking thanks to a book full of prophecies. The book, however, is a deception because the real one lies well-secured in another place and sets off a race between Arsène’s group and the sect’s henchmen.

Wann verläuft für den berühmten Dieb Arsène Lupin III mal etwas nach Plan? In »Lupin III: Farewell to Nostradamus« jedenfalls nicht, denn kaum haben er und Daisuke Jigen einen ungemein wertvollen Diamanten in die Finger bekommen, ist ihnen auch schon wieder ihr alter Bekannter Inspektor Zenigata auf den Fersen. Zwar entkommen die beiden ihrem Verfolger mittels Flugzeug, aber das ist auch der Auftakt zu einer Reihe von Rückschlägen und noch schlimmeren Vorfällen. Erst wird Arsène die Puppe, die als Versteck für den Diamanten dient, vom aufmüpfigen Mädchen Julia gestohlen, nur damit die Puppe in den Händen von Fujiko Mine landet. Als wär das nicht genug, wird das Flugzeug auch noch von Attentäter entführt.

Als sich deren Bombe allerdings scheinbar von selbst aktiviert, gelingt es den Passagieren, zurückzuschlagen und letztendlich zu entkommen. Julia wird hingegen von einer weiteren Gruppe Unbekannter entführt. Arsène erfährt, dass sie die Tochter eines Präsidentschaftskandidaten der USA ist, dass die Entführer zur mittlerweile berüchtigten Nostradamus-Sekte gehören und dass deren Oberhaupt die Entführung dank eines Buches voller Prophezeiungen vorhergesagt hat. Das Buch ist allerdings eine Täuschung, denn das echte liegt gut gesichert an einem anderen Platz. Es beginnt ein Wettrennen zwischen Arsènes Gruppe und den Schergen der Sekte.
