Il suo amico Kamina ha fondato la brigata Gurren e mira a risalire in superficie, sobillando chiunque gli capiti a tiro. In the distant future, humans have been living in a huge underground cave system in constant fear of earthquakes and collapsing tunnels. During works to increase the size of the cave, an orphan boy called Simon finds a small, shining drill head. Kamina, a friend of Simon, has always believed firmly that there is a world above the caves. And so, together with Simon and the “Gurren Brigade” he founded, he tries to break through the ceiling. But they are caught, and Kamina is subsequently taken to prison.

Simon, who works as a miner with his heart and soul, meanwhile keeps drilling through the cave and finds a face, which is shining just like the drill head he found earlier. He desperately wants to show Kamina and digs his way into his cell to free him. On the way to the face, they are once again stopped by the village head. When he is about to hold the two of them accountable, a huge earthquake occurs and the cave’s ceiling collapses, with a huge robot falling through it. While Kamina recklessly challenges the intruder to a battle, a heavily armed girl called Yoko appears and starts shooting the robot …

In ferner Zukunft leben die Menschen seit mehreren hundert Jahren mit der ständigen Angst vor Erdbeben und Einstürzen in riesigen Höhlen unter der Erde. Bei Arbeiten zur Vergrößerung der Höhle stößt ein Waisenjunge namens Simon auf einen kleinen, leuchtenden Bohrkopf. Kamina, ein Kumpel von Simon, glaubte schon immer fest daran, dass es oberhalb der Höhlen noch eine andere Welt gibt. So versucht er mit der von ihm gegründeten »Gurren Brigade«, zusammen mit Simon, durch die Decke zu brechen. Jedoch werden sie dabei erwischt und Kamina kommt daraufhin ins Gefängnis.

Simon, der mit Leib und Seele als Bergarbeiter arbeitet, bohrt sich unterdessen weiter durch die Höhle und stößt dabei auf ein Gesicht, welches genauso leuchtet, wie der Bohrkopf, den er zuvor fand. Das will er nun unbedingt Kamina zeigen und gräbt sich in dessen Zelle, um ihn zu befreien. Auf dem Weg zu dem Gesicht werden sie erneut vom Dorfvorsteher aufgehalten. Als dieser gerade dabei ist beide zur Rechenschaft zu ziehen, kommt es zu einem Erdbeben und die Höhlendecke stürzt, gefolgt von einem riesigen Roboter, ein. Während Kamina den Eindringling waghalsig zum Kampf herausfordert, taucht ein schwer bewaffnetes Mädchen mit dem Namen Yoko auf und beginnt auf den Roboter zu schießen …
