Die Geschichte im Film dreht sich um die Stadt Makka, die umgeben von Treibsand ist. Gerüchten zufolge wurde der legendäre Räuber Gasback in dieser Stadt gesichtet. Der Bürgermeister ruft einige Kopfgeldjäger herbei, um die Stadt zu beschützen. Meryl und Milly, zwei Versicherungsvertreter, sind in die Stadt gekommen, um die Situation abzuschätzen. Zu allem Übel ist auch noch der berüchtigte »Vash the Stampede« sowie die weibliche Kopfgeldjägerin Amelia und Nicholas D. Wolfwood in der Stadt und sorgen so für mächtig Aufregung.
