Pierrot Co., Ltd. is a Japanese animation studio founded in 1979 by former employees of Tatsunoko Production and Mushi Production. The headquarters are located in the Minato district of the city of Tokyo.

The beginnings of the studio can be found in April 1977, when director and animator Yuuji Nunokawa got together with Mitsuo Uenashi and Hiroko Tokita to form a small joint production group. The working office was initially a flat in the Kichijoji district of Tokyo. The origin of the company name also lies in this period – it comes from Nunokawa’s childhood memories with a circus troupe he had at the Sanno Festival.

After working on “Adventures of Maya the Honeybee” commissioned by Gakken, the small group became an animation studio and eventually changed its name to Studio Pierrot in 1979 to produce the anime “The Wonderful Adventures of Nils Holgersson”. Similarly, the headquarters were moved from the Kichijoji flat to the Minato district. Originally, the company was founded to produce the anime about Nils Holgersson, and in the process other employees joined, such as Hisayuki Toriumi, Masami Annou, Motosuke Takahashi and Mamoru Oshii.

Even after “The Wonderful Adventures of Nils Holgersson”, other TV series were produced. In the beginning, many commissions followed from Gakken. In May 1984, the subsidiary Pierrot Project was founded to take care of copyright management. Through its involvement in the anime “Urusei Yatsura”, produced by Kitty Film and broadcast on television since 1981, Studio Pierrot achieved worldwide fame. The first completely independent series, also known as the Pierrot Mahou Shoujo Series, were “Magical Angel Creamy Mami”, “Mahou no Yousei Persia”, “Magical Emi”, “Magical Idol Pastel Yumi” and “Fancy Lala”. During this period, the company transformed from a pure animation studio to one that also made financial investments to strengthen the Pierrot brand.

This was followed in 1983 by “Dallos”, one of the first OVAs to achieve worldwide recognition, thus firmly anchoring the Pierrot name in anime history. After “Urusei Yatsura”, the studio worked on various productions that were broadcast on the TV station Fuji-TV. These included the series “Kimagure Orange Road TV” in 1987 and “Yu Yu Hakusho: Ghost Files” in 1992.

In 2002, the Pierrot Project and Studio Pierrot companies were merged to form the new Pierrot company. Since 2004, Studio Pierrot has only been used as the company’s production brand.
