Ascendance of a Bookworm (2015)

Although the student Urano Motosu is already 22 years old, she does not behave as one would expect of adults. She doesn’t just love books but adores them and is usually so engrossed in them that she hardly notices anything about her surroundings. One can be glad when her environment saves her from being run over by a truck, for example. Her studies are coming to an end, and she has only recently landed a job as a librarian. However, Urano can’t enjoy it for long because, one day, during an earthquake, when she is reading again as she always does, she notices the falling mass of books too late – and is sent to the afterlife by her beloved objects.

One can argue whether it is good or bad luck, but Urano is reborn in the body of the five-year-old girl Myne. However, she has to come to terms with some hard facts: the poor and dirty lifestyle of her new family is more reminiscent of the Middle Ages, with no trace of luxury and modern achievements; the now so-young bookworm also has her problems with the other language. Henceforth, Myne has to deal with new living conditions and soon realises that books are a rare and, above all, expensive commodity in this world. Therefore, she decides: if she can’t get her hands on existing books, she will make her own!

Obwohl die Studentin Urano Motosu bereits 22 Jahre alt ist, verhält sie sich nicht gerade so, wie man es von Erwachsenen erwarten würde. Sie liebt Bücher nicht nur, sie vergöttert sie regelrecht, und ist meistens derart in diese vertieft, dass sie von ihrer Umwelt kaum etwas mitbekommt; da kann man schon froh sein, wenn ihr Umfeld sie beispielsweise davor bewahrt, von einem Laster überrollt zu werden. Ihr Studium neigt sich dem Ende zu und sie hat erst vor Kurzem einen Job als Bibliothekarin ergattert. Lange kann sich Urano allerdings nicht daran erfreuen, denn als sie eines Tages während eines Erdbebens einmal wieder liest, wie sie es immer tut, bemerkt sie zu spät die herabstürzenden Büchermengen – und wird von ihren geliebten Objekten ins Jenseits befördert.

Man kann streiten, ob es Glück oder Unglück ist, aber Urano wird wiedergeboren, und zwar im Körper des fünfjährigen Mädchens Myne. Sie muss sich allerdings mit einigen harten Fakten abfinden: Der arme und schmutzige Lebensstil ihrer neuen Familie erinnert eher ans Mittelalter, von Luxus und modernen Errungenschaften keine Spur; auch mit der anderen Sprache hat der nun so junge Bücherwurm seine Probleme. Myne muss sich fortan mit ganz neuen Lebensumständen herumschlagen und bald erkennen, dass Bücher in dieser Welt ein rares und vor allem teures Gut sind. Daher fasst sie einen Entschluss: Wenn sie an existierende Bücher nicht herankommt, dann macht sie eben ihre eigenen!
