High School: Love On (2014)

Shin Woo-Hyun is a high school student who doesn’t want to fit in with society because although he is popular thanks to his good looks, his school performance leaves a lot to be desired. He lives with his grandmother because his mother left him several years ago. When Woo-Hyun stops his classmate from attempting suicide one day, he is the one who almost dies. But he is saved at the last second by a stranger – a seemingly young woman who is an angel and is supposed to guide Woo-Hyun’s soul to the afterlife. Not only has her mission failed, but the young woman also realises she is now mortal. She spontaneously calls herself Lee Seul-Bi and moves into Woo-Hyun’s grandmother’s household at her behest.

Woo-Hyun has to change schools because of his involvement in the suicide attempt and soon makes the acquaintance of Hwang Sung-Yeol, who is also not entirely socially conformist: on the one hand, he is practically the best at school, but on the other, he is a loner whose family life is unpleasant, too. He detests his stepmother, whom he sees as the reason for his parents’ separation. The two boys soon bond over their outsider nature, as does Seul-Bi, who promptly decides to attend school as a mortal to learn more about the way of life and emotional world of humans. However, it doesn’t take long for the three to grow closer and, thus, the first conflicts are inevitable …

Shin Woo-Hyun ist ein Oberschüler, der nicht so recht ins Gesellschaftbild passen will, denn dank seines guten Aussehens ist er zwar beliebt, aber die schulischen Leistungen lassen zu wünschen übrig. Er lebt bei seiner Großmutter, weil ihn seine Mutter schon vor etlichen Jahren verlassen hat. Als Woo-Hyun eines Tages seine Klassenkameradin von einem Selbstmordversuch abhält, ist er es, der um ein Haar stirbt. Doch in letzter Sekunde wird von einer Unbekannten gerettet – einer scheinbar jungen Frau, die in Wirklichkeit ein Engel ist und eigentlich Woo-Hyuns Seele ins Jenseits geleiten sollte. Aber nicht nur ihr Auftrag ist gescheitert, die junge Frau stellt danach fest, dass sie nun eine Sterbliche ist. Sie nimmt spontan den Namen Lee Seul-Bi an und zieht auf Geheiß von Woo-Hyuns Großmutter in deren Haushalt ein.

Woo-Hyun muss wegen der Verwicklung mit dem Selbstmordversuch die Schule wechseln und macht dort bald Bekanntschaft mit Hwang Sung-Yeol, der auch nicht ganz gesellschaftskonform ist: auf der einen Seite praktisch der Beste an der Schule, aber andererseits auch ein Einzelgänger, dessen Familienleben ebenfalls unerfreulich ist. Er verabscheut seine Stiefmutter, die er als Grund für die Trennung seiner Eltern sieht. Die beiden Jungen verbindet bald ihre Außenseiter-Natur, aber auch Seul-Bi, die prompt beschließt, als Sterbliche ebenfalls die Schule zu besuchen, um mehr über die Lebensweise und Gefühlswelt der Menschen zu lernen. Es dauert jedoch nicht lange, bis die drei sich näherkommen und erste Konflikte vorprogrammiert sind …
