Akane Tsunemori arbeitet als Ermittlerin für das AFÖS (Amt für Öffentliche Sicherheit). Da sie das College mit ausgezeichneten Zensuren (und einer daraus folgenden Zugangsberechtigung zu allen Institutionen Japans) verließ, wurde sie nicht wie die meisten Bürger durch das SYBIL-System einem Job zugewiesen, sondern durfte ihren Beruf frei wählen.

Bei ihrem ersten Einsatz wirkt Akane schüchtern und naiv. Während ihrer Arbeit für das AFÖS gewinnt sie jedoch deutlich an Selbstsicherheit und entpuppt sich als sehr talentierte Ermittlerin. Sie kann manchmal stur sein und ist nachtragend, wenn gegen ihren Willen gehandelt wird. Auf der anderen Seite ist Akane sehr höflich und respektvoll. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Shinya Kougami entwickelt sie einen ausgeprägten Gerechtigkeitssinn; dieser respektiert ihre Arbeitsmoral und ihre Liebe zum Gesetz.

Nachdem Kougami verschwindet, raucht sie jedes Mal, wenn sie ein Problem hat, das sie nicht lösen kann, die gleichen Zigaretten wie Shin’ya Kougami, um an ihn zu denken. Sie hat auch manchmal Halluzinationen von Kougami.
